Spur On

TITLE: “Spur on”

CHAPTER READ: Hebrews 10

SCRIPTURE SELECTED: Hebrews10:23-25
23 Let us hold unnervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

OBSERVATION: The writer includes himself in the admonishment, saying two times: “Let us”. These are things each of us must take part in. We are to not give up but hold on to the hope which comes from the promises God has made to us. He is faithful! We also need to encourage one another towards sharing good deeds and to not draw back from meeting together for mutual encouragement. The closer we get to Christ’s return the more we need one another.

APPLICATION: I think that we are of the tendency to believe that the closer we get to God the less we need others. But the reality is that the closer we get to God, the more we need to be around others. Not just for our protection and encouragement, but so that we can encourage others and participate in love and good works. For it is as we encourage one another we are becoming more like Him. In these days of Covid-19, we need to consider how it is we can love and share good deeds and then practice it daily.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to encourage others, and together may we spur each other on to share good deeds. In this time when we are told to practice social distancing, may we especially be known for the way in which we love one another. May we not draw back and grow complacent. May we draw upon Your Spirit and receive strength from each other.
