Majoring on the Minors

BY: Pastor Bob Miller

TITLE: “Majoring on the Minors?”

CHAPTER READ: Romans 14

SCRIPTURE SELECTED: Romans 14:17-18
17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.

OBSERVATION:
In our desire to serve God and to be what He wants us to be and to do what He wants us to do, we each come to conclusions about what God wants for our life with regards to what we should eat or drink, or what is right and what is wrong. We then begin to project what we believe onto others and that can cause division and strive between followers of Christ. Relationships are a priority with our Lord and I can’t be “right” when I’m arguing for my own way and standing up for what I believe to the detriment of others.

APPLICATION:
Too often, I find that I “major on the minor things” and I let that which is the most important slide. I get all up in arms about things that won’t matter in eternity and ignore that which is most important to God. I can go to sleep at night with discontent and brokenness because I “stood up for what I believed”. This is not what the Kingdom of God is about. He calls me to major on that which will last – to put my priority in relationships. When there is division and strife which exists in the body of Christ, this must be dealt with as a matter of priority!

PRAYER:
Lord, Help me to major on the things that are most important to You. May I take time to listen and understand others around me. May I not so interested in bringing others to my “point of view” but together may we come to Your viewpoint. May I live in Your love today! Amen
