CHAPTER READ: 2 Peter 2
SCRIPTURE SELECTED: 2 Peter 2:17-19
17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”
OBSERVATION: Peter warns us about people who lead us astray and about the evidence and danger of following in their footsteps and teachings. They may seem to be successful by the standards of this world but blackest darkness is reserved for them. They brag and promote themselves and their message centers on “getting what you want” and promising stuff that appeals to our desires. They promise “freedom” but they themselves are slaves to sin, for they remain the master of their own life.
APPLICATION: It is easy to be swayed by words that appeal to our ease and comfort and to buy into quick and easy” solutions that don’t include our own need to make Christ “Lord and Master” of our life. We want what God can give us, but we don’t want Him.
PRAYER: Lord, I make You my master and the Lord of my life! I realize that the evidence of that declaration will be revealed in the manner in which I obey You. May my life today be lived in such a manner that that commitment is affirmed! Amen
