An Extravagant Love

BY: Pastor Bob Miller

CHAPTER READ: Matthew 26

SCRIPTURE SELECTED: Matthew 26:6-7
6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.”

OBSERVATION:
While Jesus was reclining at the table a woman came to him with a very expensive jar of perfume and she took and poured it on his head. What strikes me is that she did this without being asked. Nor was it in response to something that Jesus had just done for her. She also took something that was precious and expensive and once the jar was broken it could not be returned. She did not give out of her left-overs, but took that which she held dear to heart and gave it to Jesus…just because!

APPLICATION:
I have to ask myself how often do I measure my giving to the Lord and how could my giving be labeled “extravagant”. This lady gave, not because others were watching; not because she was expected to give; not because Jesus asked her, not because she wanted something in return; but just because she loved Him! As I give to the Lord this week…through my life and in my offerings, will it look at all like the gift she gave?

PRAYER:
Lord, may my life be an expression of gratitude to You for setting me free, and forgiving my sin, and adopting me into your family, and for calling my name! Set me free to love extravagantly! Amen
